Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul

"Recovery destinations should match the recovery phase. Bonito is wonderful — for the right week. Patients who arrive in Brazil for major implant work and expect to dive into rivers on day three end up either skipping the experience or risking complications. Both are avoidable with proper planning."

Why we recommend Bonito for the right recovery phase

Bonito is one of Brazil's most distinctive ecotourism destinations — a small town surrounded by limestone caves, crystal-clear rivers, and protected forest. For international dental tourism patients, the calm environment supports healing. That said, Bonito isn't ideal for the first phase of recovery. Most of the city's signature attractions involve water exposure (snorkeling in rivers, floating downstream, diving in caves), which can increase infection risk during the first 2-3 weeks post-surgery. We recommend Bonito specifically for 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, when initial healing is complete. For patients staying in Brazil for 3-4 weeks total — common in larger implant cases or rehabilitation — Bonito works well as the second-week destination. First days in São Paulo for procedures and immediate follow-up; days in Bonito later, when you're ready to enjoy the environment instead of just resting.

in case of an emergency, please follow these steps:

Bonito has limited medical infrastructure. Nearest full hospital is in Campo Grande (4 hours by road). For dental emergencies, our protocol:

1. Immediate contact via L'Oris 24/7 WhatsApp line
2. Video assessment by Dra. Cristina or Dra. Eloisa
3. Minor issues: guided self-care with remote supervision
4. Significant issues: coordinated return to São Paulo by air (4-hour transit)
5. Emergencies: Campo Grande hospital referral with our coordination

Frequently asked questions

How long after dental surgery can I travel to Bonito?
For routine procedures like veneers, crowns, or cleaning, you can typically travel within a few days. For dental implants, bone grafting, or periodontal surgery, we recommend waiting at least 2 to 3 weeks before traveling to Bonito specifically — primarily because the destination's signature activities involve water exposure that poses infection risk during initial healing. Patients undergoing simpler procedures or who completed the early recovery phase can travel sooner.
Can I really not swim in Bonito's rivers?
For the first 2 to 3 weeks after most dental surgeries, water exposure increases the risk of infection at surgical sites — including freshwater rivers and natural springs, regardless of how clean the water appears. Bonito's most famous attractions involve snorkeling and floating in rivers. If swimming is non-negotiable for your trip, we recommend scheduling Bonito for the third or fourth week of your stay in Brazil, after appropriate healing time. Patients doing routine treatments (cleaning, whitening, veneers without significant tissue involvement) typically have no swimming restrictions.
Is Bonito too remote for dental emergencies?
Bonito is approximately 4 hours from the nearest major hospital in Campo Grande, and 4-6 hours from São Paulo by air. For most dental tourism patients, this distance is acceptable because we only recommend Bonito for the later recovery phase, when complications are rare. We provide 24/7 contact with our team during your stay, and we coordinate any necessary return to São Paulo through air transit. For patients who prefer staying closer to advanced medical care, we recommend our other recovery destinations within easier reach.
What if I have a dental complication during my stay?
All our dental tourism patients receive a direct 24/7 WhatsApp contact line with our team during their entire stay in Brazil. For any concern, contact us immediately — we provide initial assessment via video call, guide you through self-care for minor issues, and coordinate logistics if return to São Paulo is needed. Complications during the recovery phases we recommend for Bonito are statistically rare, but the protocol exists to ensure you have direct access to your dentist regardless of where you are.
What language do people speak in Bonito?
Portuguese is the primary language. English is spoken in tourist-facing services (hotels, tour operators, restaurants in the main tourist area) but at varying levels of fluency. For international patients concerned about communication during recovery, we recommend staying at boutique pousadas with confirmed English-speaking staff. Our team also remains available via WhatsApp throughout your stay for any communication needs, including helping translate medical or logistical concerns if they arise.
How is Bonito different from other recovery destinations?
Bonito is the most nature-immersed of our recovery destinations. Compared to coastal options like Trancoso or Ilhabela, Bonito offers ecotourism in a freshwater context — caves, rivers, and protected forest rather than beaches. It's more remote and has less developed luxury infrastructure than beach destinations, but more authentic ecotourism experiences. Best for patients who specifically want a nature-focused experience and are flexible about avoiding water activities during recovery.
